A tragic incident off Haiti’s northern coast claims the lives of 40 migrants as their boat catches fire. The escalating violence and poverty in Haiti drive increasing migration, with over 86,000 migrants forcibly returned this year alone. International efforts aim to stabilize the country amidst the crisis. “Haiti’s socioeconomic situation is in agony,” remarked Gregoire Goodstein, IOM’s chief of mission in Haiti. “The extreme violence over the past months has only brought Haitians to resort to desperate measures even more.”
