On Wednesday, Bolivia experienced a swift and dramatic coup attempt led by General Juan José Zúñiga, who claimed to be acting to “restore democracy.” Armored vehicles rammed the government palace doors, prompting President Luis Arce to call it a coup attempt. Within hours, Arce named a new army commander who ordered the troops to stand down. The rebellion ended after three hours, with soldiers and military vehicles retreating. Hundreds of Arce’s supporters celebrated outside the palace.
