Imagine, you are playing hide and seek, you hide inside a parked container, you fell asleep and end up in a new country. Sounds like a plot twist of a survival movie, right? But it happened for real, with a 15-year-old Bangladeshi boy.
Was suspected to be victim of human trafficking
On January 17, while unloading containers off of a Bangladeshi vessel, Malaysia’s Port Klang staff were shocked to see a confused and emaciated boy step out of one of the containers. The boy neither spoke nor understood the local language, so communicating with him was a huge struggle.
Authorities, suspecting that he was the victim of a human trafficking crime organisation, immediately called the police. It turned out that it wasn’t the case of human trafficking or any crime, for that matter. Just a typical day gone wrong for the boy.
He fell asleep
15-year old Fahim was playing hide and seek with his friends in Chittagong, Bangladesh. Meanwhile, he chose a shipping container to hide and accidentally locked himself in, after which he fell asleep.
The container was then taken to a commercial ship to sail for Malaysia. The ship started its journey on January 11 from the port of Chittagong and reached Port Klang in Malaysia on January 17.
Locked inside container for 6 days
The boy was locked inside the container for 6 whole days and screamed for help from within the container but was not audible to anyone. How he survived 6 days without a morsel of food or water is still a mystery to everyone.
Photos and clips shot by workers at Port Klang show the boy looking confused by the unfamiliar surroundings as he steps out of the shipping container. He was later picked up by an ambulance and taken to a local hospital. Arrangements are also being made to send him back to Bangladesh once he recovers.
In October last year, police recovered a decomposed body of a young man from a container shipped to Malaysia’s Penang port from Chittagong.
