Japan’s first-ever megaquake advisory: What does it mean?

Japan issued its first “megaquake advisory” after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit Kyushu’s southeastern coast on August 8. Concerned about possible stronger quakes in the Nankai Trough, the government and public are urged to brace for future seismic activity. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida cancelled his trip to address the situation.
