Japan’s Supreme Court will rule Wednesday on the defunct eugenics law that led to the forced sterilization of around 16,500 people. Victims seek compensation and an apology for decades of suffering. The law, in effect from 1948 to 1996, permitted sterilisations to prevent “poor quality descendants.” The ruling could impact ongoing and future claims against the government.
